September 3, 2014 — It is said to be a million-to-one chance, and happens more often among parents of mixed race heritage, but a woman of Nigerian heritage has beaten those odds.Little Jonah has his father’s pale skin, blue eyes and light brown hair, an unusual thing since his mother is black.

Daily Mail reports that 32-year-old Catherine Howarth was at first a little taken aback when she saw her son Jonah for the first time.

Recalling the moment she delivered Jonah in Milton Keynes Hospital on June 1, his mother said: ‘The midwife looked at me and looked back down at Jonah and then at me again and couldn’t believe it.’

Catherine, who lives in Milton Keynes with her husband, Richard, is the second person of Nigerian heritage to have beat the million-to-one odd. The other couple, Benjaman and Angela Ihegboro, had a stranger case as both of them are of Nigerian origin with not a drop of Caucasian genes. The Ihegboro’s daughter Naomi is pale-skinned and blond-haired and doctors ruled out albinism.

Many people see the births and the recessive gene that is said to be responsible as a testament that the human race stemmed from the same stock. For some, the big question could be ‘Was that stock white?’.
