/></p><p>Prelude to the 2014 Border-Gavaskar Trophy</p><p>Though Australian cricketer Phil Hughes' sudden demise may have shifted the spot-light from India's abandoned warm-up match against Cricket Australia XI, the fact that five batsmen including skipper Virat Kohli racked up half-centuries, highlights that the visitors are set to play ball, come the first test at Brisbane on December /></p><p>Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Kohli,Wriddhiman Saha and Karn Sharma were the half-centurions for India, and though it may be too early to predict that the visitors would replicate the same against a full-strength Australian eleven, still the match has given them enough impetus to carry on the good form to Brisbane.</p><p>It was not long ago when a star-studded Indian team, which included the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni made the long sojourn to Australia, post a routine series win over the West Indies on home soil.</p><p>Australia had fought enterprising battles against South Africa and New Zealand earlier, and the visiting Indian team was just the perfect requisite for them to get their stuttering Test form back on track.</p><p>India put in manful displays in their first two tour matches against a Chairman's XI side, which saw almost all their main batsmen get valuable runs under their belt.</p><p>Despite both games ending in dull draws, the stage was set for India to replicate the heroics of Saurav Ganguly and Anil Kumble's sides in the 2003-04 and 2007-08 tours.</p><p>When India faced their first real test against a full-strength Australian side at Melbourne, the end result of the match clearly indicated that the visitors had done an impromptu volt face, courtesy a meek performance.</p><p>The first Test match was just the start of India's woes throughout the tour, as Australia put in a buccaneering performance and outclassed the visitors with both bat and ball.</p><p>Despite a Zaheer Khan-led attack toiling away, Australia racked up 333 in their first essay and later shot out India for 282, thanks to Ben Hilfenhaus' five-wicket haul.</p><p>Though Virender Sehwag, Dravid and Tendulkar stepped up gears and took the game to the Aussies, with vital half-centuries, still the Indians handed over a 51-run lead to Michael Clarke's side, thus giving the home side the edge.</p><p>As Australia were restricted to a modest 240 in the second innings, James Pattinson's heroics with the ball ensured that India rolled up without a fight and lost by 122 runs.</p><p>None of the Indian batsmen showed real application against the Australian pacers, and the manner in which they collapsed set alarm bells ringing for the rest of the tour.</p><p>The win was just the first installement in Australia's brilliant run during the rest of the series and once again exposed India's batting frailities against top-class pace bowling.</p><p>Come Sydney, and Pattinson and Hilfenhaus had an ally in Peter Siddle this time around, as the trio compounded India's misery by shooting them out for a paltry 191.</p><p>An already demoralised India, failed to shrug off the demons of Melbourne as apart from Dhoni's sedate half-century, and Tendulkar's 41, none of them showed even an iota of a fightback.</p><p>It was the same old story repeated at the SCG as the Australian pacers once again got on top of India's batting by the scruff, and polished them off in a jiffy.</p><p>Clarke later took center stage with an epic knock of 329, and was suitably aided by centuries from Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey, thus setting India a mountain to climb.</p><p>Australia finished at a mammoth 659 for 4, and their declaration meant that India were well and truly out of the game.</p><p>The second innings was probably India's best ever in the series, as their batsmen fought toe-to-toe with the Aussies, in their quest to salvage the match.</p><p>Salvage they did not, but half-centuries from Gautam Gambhir, Tendulkar, Laxman and Ravichandran Ashwin ensured that India saved face and finished at 400, despite enduring a 68-run loss.</p><p>That loss effectively ended India's hopes of winning the series, and made sure that Dhoni's men needed a minor miracle if they were to win the remaining two games.</p><p>The WACA ground at Perth invokes fond memories for most Indian cricket fans, thanks to Tendulkar's fine 114 long ago in 1992, and also the 72-run humbling India alloted to the Aussies during the 2007-08 tour.</p><p>Though the terror ground at Perth presented India an opportunity to claw back in the series and show some real mettle, there was no encore of either 1992 or 2007-08, as the visitors were outclassed by Hilfenhaus and Siddle and were all-out for 161, in the first innings.</p><p>The Aussie pace duo stole the show again with figures of 4 for 43 and 3 for 42, and Kohli played lone-ranger for India with a gritty 44.</p><p>The Australian innings saw David Warner's whirlwind 180 take India's bowling to the cleaners and by the time the home side finished at 360, partly due to Umesh Yadav's battling five-wicket haul, the game was well and truly snatched away from Dhoni's side.</p><p>It was the same old story in India's second-innings as Hilfenhaus and Siddle shared seven wickets amongst them, and skittled out the visitors for a meagre 171, thus giving Australia the match by 37 runs.</p><p>Though Kohli stood tall amongst the ruins with a fine 75, and Dravid did his best to anchor the batting with a composed 47, still the Aussie bowling proved too hot to handle for the rest of the Indian batsmen, as they collapsed in a heap and handed over the series to Australia.</p><p>So was it well and truly game over for India at the WACA?</p><p>Come game four at the Adelaide Oval and India were already a beaten and beleagured side by that time, with innumerable questions being raised over Dhoni's captaincy and also their failure to shed off the 'subcontinental tigers' tag.</p><p>With the series already lost to the rampaging Aussies, India had nothing but pride to play for at Adelaide, and looked to have put their best foot on when they reduced Australia to 84 for 3 in the first innings.</p><p>But as they say, cometh the hour and cometh the men, and it was Ponting and Clarke who tormented India, thanks to their marathon knocks of 221 and 210, which shut the door on the visitors once and for all.</p><p>India's bowling was run ragged by the duo and as Australia finished at a huge 604 for 7, the visitors resembled pieces of papers stuck in a gale.</p><p>Siddle came back to torment India with another terrific bowling which yielded him five-wickets and it was left to Kohli once more to play hero, with a timely 116.</p><p>Kohli's knock ensured that India saved face with a score of 272, and their woes continued as Australia decided to bat on without ensuring a follow-on.</p><p>The Aussies scored a quick 167 in the second essay, and by the time Ponting and Brad Haddin walked off into the pavilion, India were set a near impossible task of chasing down 499.</p><p>Despite Sehwag's soldiering 62, spinner Nathan Lyon and pace-gun Ryan Harris closed out India for 201, thus making true a 4-0 series whitewash for Australia, and ending a truly miserable tour Down-Under for Dhoni's men.</p><p>As the dust settles post Hughes' death and also the fact that India will face a completely different Australian outfit, come the Brisbane test, still darkening memories of 2011-12 will do well enough to pep up India, as they embarg on their quest to win their first ever test-series Down-Under and etch their names in cricketing history.</p><p>Now only time will tell as to whether India can live up to the challenge posed by Australia's fiery pace-men in the four-test series, or will they turn in a Jekyll-Hyde performance, akin to the one they produced during that ill-fated tour of 2011-12.</p>

<p>India had almost turned the game on its head, and Bhuvneshwar had played a huge part in it, until that poor, poor 49th over. Or maybe Australia were just holding it back for the end? Two close wins now for Australia. THAT IS VICTORY FOR AUSTRALIA! What a terrible over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Slightly down leg side and Faulkner sweeps it past short fine leg! Four and Australia have won. Kumar has conceded 16 off the 49th over.</p><p>Biffed hard down the ground, only a single as it went quickly to the fielder. 3 needed off 7 balls.</p><p>Wide ball! 8 off nine. And the next ball is on middle and smashed for a boundary through covers. Kumar has bowled so well all day, but he has bowled a poor second last over.</p><p>Faulkner gives room, Kumar follows him. Thrashed into the off side, Dhawan misses a direct hit. They run a single. A direct hit and the batsman was gone.</p><p>Swung hard into the leg side, and four! Bad ball from Kumar, almost a half-tracker. Inexcusable at this stage. 10 needed off 10.</p><p>Almost a dot ball, Kumar misfields and they get 1. 14 off 11.</p><p>Kumar will bowl out here. How did it come down to this?</p><p>Beautiful delivery, Faulkner played across and missed, huge appeal. Should have been out. He was caught in front, should have hit middle and leg.</p><p>Driven through covers! The pressure is off. Right in the blockhole and Maxwell had to do everything he ever could to keep it out. Now a fast searing delivery into Maxwell and he defends awkwardly. Where was Yadav for the first 75% of the Australian innings?</p><p>Yadav continues, and Haddin wisely turns over the strike to Maxwell, who won't look for an encore against Yadav.</p><p>Over 44</p><p>SIX! And just like that, Maxwell has decided the fun is over for India. A six into the stands and then a slogged boundary straight down the ground. 27 needed off 36. A cakewalk. But why are Kumar's two overs left behind?</p><p>Australia were so far ahead in the game than even after losing three quick wickets they still have noses in front. 37 off 39 is no big deal, but the momentum has shifted to India. Now an appeal for caught behind, declined.</p><p>OUT! Bailey is out stumped! Australia, what are you doing? R Ashwin is ecstatic, and the Indians in the crowd, who constitute about 70% of it, can't believe it. Australia 230/5.</p><p>Over 43</p><p>Short ball coming into the body, and the batsman flicks it over the slips. Third man comes running in and only a single is scored. Decent over from Umesh, just three of it. 39 needed from 42, but surely Australia are pretending.</p><p>Umesh Yadav is into his ninth over and has bowled two dot balls, but followed it up with a wide. Nevertheless, Australia seem to be trying to make it tough for themselves.</p><p>Komal is a hopeful fan, like millions of others:</p><p>Over 42</p><p>There comes the reverse sweep! But it fetches nothing for Maxwell. Three off an Ashwin over. Australia need 42 from 48 balls.</p><p>We are subjected to some inconsequential highlights of how Glenn Maxwell used the reverse sweep effectively against....hold your breath....Zimbabwe. Oh, and it's Ashwin bowling. The Indians in the crowd are cheering dot balls like its 42 needed off 15 balls.</p><p>Over 41</p><p>Australia 223/4 after 41 overs; 45 needed off 54 balls.</p><p>Crazy short ball from Yadav, it came seaming in hard and Bailey took his eyes off. The ball hit Bailey's bat which was hanging like a periscope, but did not go to hand. The fifth ball is short again, soars over Maxwel's head and is called a wide.</p><p>OUT! Another one goes! Is there still life in this game? It is Finch now, on 96. He gets a tame outside edge which is safely pouched by Dhoni. Australia 219/4.</p><p>Umesh Yadav comes back and starts with a wide so far down leg it should have been called two wides.</p><p>Over 40</p><p>Smith got the ball high on the bat. Is the huddle a World Cup style statement? It's back again and we are less than a month from the Cup. Australia 217/3 after 40 overs.</p><p>OUT! Slower delivery from Shami, Smith plays a strange-looking pull, and straight into the hands of short midwicket. Smith is gone for 47. Australia 215/2 after 39 overs. Just 53 needed off 66 balls, 8 wickets in hand.</p><p>Apart from Axar Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, all Indian bowlers have been very expensive. Oh, and Axar just got stroked through the off side for four. 55 needed off 70 balls.</p><p>Over 38</p><p>Now, Mohammad Shami is providing some false hope to Indian fans by giving away just two runs off the 38th over. 208/2.</p><p>Over 37</p><p>Six runs get milked off the over. Australia 206/2 off 37 overs.</p><p>The Indian team went into a huddle during the break. Good to watch bt may just be too late. Axar Patel comes back. Can he get three quick wickets?</p><p>Over 36</p><p>Smith gets a wide yorker which he digs out to third man. Finch is on 89. Smith is 38 off 39. The fourth Australian fifty has come in just 39 balls. Australia 200/2 after 36 overs, good over by the going standards from Shami.</p><p>And the barbs continue to come in:</p><p>Australia have decided to take the batting powerplay with only 71 runs needed. Shami is 0/37 off 5.1 overs. There is no way India are winning this match except for a miracle.</p><p>Over 34</p><p>Following the six, all Australia need is some milking. Which continues in the form of a run a ball. Just 77 needed off 96 balls now with 8 wickets in hand. Australia 191/2 after 34 overs.</p><p>India's defences are collapsing fast. At least I could finish work early. Raina gives the ball plenty of air, half-volley right in the slot for Finch, who swings a six straight down the ground.</p><p>Over 33</p><p>Inexplicably, Umesh Yadav (1/34) has been brought back. He is now down to conceding a run a ball. Full on the legs, tickled away for four through fine leg. Australia 177/2 after 33 overs.</p><p>Over 32</p><p>He bowls a wide first up. And then he gets smacked for six over long on. Full swing of the arms, and Finch has now shaken off his bad form courtesy some mediocre Indian bowling. 10 runs off the over, Australia 170/2.</p><p>Not surprisingly, the team is earning flak on Twitter:</p><p>Time to try something different. Australia 160/2 after 31 overs.</p><p>Dhoni is now standing up to the stumps as Kumar enters his eighth over. Thick edge off a drive from Finch finds the boundary. Australia reach 150. Now another short ball, too wide, and cut away. Cannot fathom why Ashwin is bowling his 7th over on the trot. Australia are not in top gear, but they continue to milk the Indian bowling. And now a boundary to deep cover. Alright, so Ashwin makes amends for his first over by conceding 2 off the second. 102/1 after 20 overs. India were 89/3 at this stage.</p><p>R Ashwin, introduced into the attack in the 18th over, will bowl his second.</p><p>Over 19</p><p>Finch finally gets a run of the fifth ball, moving to 34 off 62 balls. It has been a struggle for Finch, but India's mediocre bowling has ensured he at least stays at the crease. Australia 100/1 after 19 overs.</p><p>Axar Patel continues with his fourth over, and immediately beats Finch who went for a late cut.</p><p>Over 17</p><p>Ooh...Finch was nearly foxed in the flight. Next ball, he is foxed again and there's an appeal which is turned down by the umpire. Australia 88/1 after 17 overs.</p><p>First two balls of Axar's third over get milked for two, and he makes a big noise on the third though the batsman was in no danger. Now four balls for three.</p><p>Over 16</p><p>The commentators take time out to show us Wasim Akram's 5/21 in Melbourne in 1985. He was very, very young, and sent Aussie stumps flying. Can't expect the same from Yadav though. Aussies 85/1 after 16 overs.</p><p>Umesh Yadav will bowl despite his profligacy, and he will bowl two dot balls first up. The third ball though, just sits up for Watson to hit and he crashes it through point for four with the force of a bullet.</p><p>Over 15</p><p>Six runs off the fifteenth over which was bowled by Axar Patel. Australia 78/1.</p><p>Over 14</p><p>Take out Finch (26 off 47) and Australia have been on fire. I say this even as Watson cuts a short ball outside off to the third man boundary. Follows up a maiden with a short, wide ball that Watson accepts with ease, and dispatches to the cover boundary.</p><p>Over 13</p><p>Two dot balls and then another short one, which fetches only one. Short, effort ball from Umesh Yadav, and Warner tried to pull it. Got big on him quickly, and he spooned a top edge to cover. Australia motoring along at 49/0 after 8 overs.</p><p>Over 7</p><p>Kohli scores with a direct hit as David Warner tries to scramble back after trying a non existent single. The third umpire is called in but it's not out. Australia 38/0 after 7 overs.</p><p>Over 6</p><p>Good over so far from Shami. Just 4 off it. Shami is hitting the early 140s in pace with consistency. No run off the last ball, Australia 34/0 after 6 overs.</p><p>After a good fifth over from Bhuvneshwar, Shami is back for his second.</p><p>Over 4</p><p>Another boundary. Short again, and Warner flicks it high into the leg side for four. Australia 29/0 after 4 overs.</p><p>First change already on for India. Mohammad Shami to bowl. And the first ball is short and outside leg stump, duly pulled away for four by Warner. The second is wide.</p><p>Over 3</p><p>Kumar tries to repair Aaron's damage, concedes just 2 off the third over. Australia 20/0 after 3 overs.</p><p>Over 2</p><p>Now a wide, full ball and beautifully driven by Finch for four. Australia 18/0 after 2 overs.</p><p>Umesh Yadav is the new ball bowler along with Kumar, and he begins to leak runs. It's Finch and Warner. The target is 268. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the bowler for India. Wide off the fourth ball.</p><p>267/8 is a par score in Melbourne. India will have to bowl well to win the match. It was only the Rohit Sharma-Suresh Raina partnership that was extremely fluent. Otherwise, India struggled throughout. Where would they be without Rohit's 138? And by the way, the innings has lasted four hours.</p><p>Over 50</p><p>Moves away from the stump, misses, ball sails over the stumps, wicketkeeper shies, misses too, and they get a single. India end on 267/8 off 50 overs, about 25 runs short of where they would like to be.</p><p>Shami has another wild swing but only gets....one run. Last ball coming up.</p><p>Two runs off three balls so far. India have scored just 58 off 57 balls in the last ten overs. Make that 59 off 58.</p><p>Over 49</p><p>OUT! They are falling fast. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is bowled, off a full toss, first ball. And Starc has 6/43. Take him away and its 219/2. No run off the last ball to Shami. What a spell of fast bowling. Ashwin makes room, miscues over gully-point. Fielder runs in from the deep but spoons it. Two runs. He is also looking at India's fitness problems from the corner of his eyes. Ishant Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja have still not recovered from injuries, or are being given some extra rest to keep them fit for the World Cup.</p><p>India-Australia ODI encounters have always been thrilling, but Dhoni is a man with one hand on the ODI captaincy and the other still on the World Cup trophy he won in 2011. For India and Dhoni, this tri series (with England as the third team) is much like a dress rehearsal for defending the trophy next month.</p><p>Australia on the other hand are a very confident side after having beaten England in the first ODI and won a Test series against India 2-0 before that. The home side though is also fretting over the fitness of Mitchell Marsh and Michael Clarke. Warner, who is rumoured to be injured, might just be forced to open anyway.</p>

Don't expect any miracles from Narendra Modi's meet with China's Xi Jinping

<p><strong>New Delhi, Jaideep Prabhu(DNA):</strong> The visit of Chinese premier Xi Jinping to India this week is the most awaited meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure so far. Two of Asia's largest states – in size, population, military, and economy – will discuss issues that affect over a third of humanity. Yet more interesting to observers is that Xi's visit comes between meetings with two other heads of state that have elicited much attention: between Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe a fortnight ago, and between Modi and US President Barack Obama next fortnight.</p><h2>Don't expect any miracles from Narendra Modi's meet with China's Xi Jinping</h2><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2014/09/15/267400-narendra-modi-xi-jinping-afp.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>In advance of the arrival of the Chinese diplomatic delegation, the barrage of ostensibly sweet yet meaningless words has already started. Assistant Chinese Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao told reporters, "India is a country with which China has been friendly for thousands of years." Even Xi said when he met Modi for the first time at the BRICS summit in Fortaleza, Brazil, that it felt like he was meeting an old friend. As Sir Humphrey would remind us, "It is necessary to get behind someone before you can stab them in the back." Nevertheless, to paraphrase the old priest Laocoön's famous warning* to his fellow Trojans, timeo Sinae et dona ferentes.</p><p>And come bearing gifts, they do. The Chinese delegation will have over 100 business heads and is expected to invest $100 billion in India over the next five years, thrice the $34 billion that Abe promised Modi earlier this month. The comparison was bluntly underscored by Liu Youfa, Beijing's consul-general in Bombay. China's banks hold $4 trillion in foreign currency reserves and are desperately looking for investment opportunities. India's hungry economy is finally generating international interest and the Chinese, having already dealt with Modi when he was chief minister of Gujarat, are optimistic about their south-western neighbour.</p><p>India needs massive investment in infrastructure and developing its manufacturing potential. China Inc will be looking at the modernisation of Indian railways, construction of highways, power generation and distribution, irrigation, ports, and manufacturing. Two industrial parks, one in Pune and the other in Gandhinagar, have already been finalised and will make power equipment and automobiles; two more have been planned in Tamil Nadu for textiles and food processing. Orissa expects to be India's energy gateway on the east coast.</p><p>If there is anything that can be foretold about the summit with certainty, it is that the China hawks in India will be sorely disappointed. Modi is far more pragmatic than his supporters or detractors give him credit for and realises that India is a pygmy compared to Chinese economic – and consequently military and diplomatic – wherewithal. The meeting between Modi and Xi will not see Delhi handing Beijing ultimatums on Chinese-occupied Kashmir or China's activities in Gilgit-Baltistan.</p><p>However, international optimism in Modi's leadership has allowed India to leverage its ties with Japan and the United States to force China to be more sensitive to its concerns. Beijing is well aware that there is no pivot to Asia by anyone without Delhi and it hopes to persuade its neighbour of the virtue of remaining, as it were, non-aligned. Additionally, an unhappy India would open up another flank and divert resources from China's competition in the Pacific with the United States. Interestingly, India has found itself alongside China on several economic issues such as subsidies and climate change, yet with the United States on political issues such as democracy, a larger geopolitical role for India in the region, and Islamism.</p><p>Despite the big investments, it remains unclear how much China is willing to pander to India. As much as India needs capital inflows, China is also looking for sound markets to park its money. Even economically, there is some friction between the Asian giants. India is concerned about its trade deficit with China and would like easier access to Chinese markets for its pharmaceutical, agricultural, and information technology products; similarly, China would like to expand in India's telecom sector, but suspicions in Delhi about its neighbour's intentions and cyber capabilities has so far put the idea on the back burner.</p><p>As part of the economic integration of South and Southeast Asia, China has invited India to become part of its Maritime Silk Route (MSR). However, this may well be a strategy to hem India into a Chinese regional order – BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) are both fora in which Beijing's superior clout may prevent India from chasing its interests but not vice versa. India's growing weapons purchases from the United States and the West has irked Russia, and with Western policies pushing it towards China, Delhi might find that it does not have as sympathetic an ear in Moscow anymore either.</p><p>The temptations of joining a ready-made mechanism are many, e specially when one cannot afford the enormous infrastructural development outlays needed for Southeast or Central Asia. However, Delhi must exercise caution not to be too indebted to Beijing that it restricts political manoeuvrability, a lesson not lost on Laos or Cambodia. India has envisioned its own International North South Trade Corridor (INSTC) that would connect India with Central Asia and the Mediterranean but, not surprisingly, the proposal has been languishing in the doldrums for years.</p><p>The root of Sino-Indian tensions, however, lies in their old border dispute, over which a war was fought in 1962. The result was the loss of 38,000 square kilometres by India to China in addition to the 5,180 square kilometres Pakistan illegally ceded to China a year later, a bruised Indian national ego, and an enduring Sinophobia among many Indians. To make matters worse, China still claims Arunachal Pradesh and border incursions are frequent and serious. India caved in on the question of Tibetan independence and it is not even on the horizon.</p><p>China's hand in its negotiations with India is not as weak as some would portray – the China-in-need-of-an-ally against an aggressive US pivot to Asia image is a myth. For Beijing, a calm south-western border would be nice but it has already invested strategically in India's other neighbour Pakistan to keep Delhi off balance. Islamabad's nuclear weapons and missiles, both initially gifted by the Chinese, have created a permanent thorn in India's side. Beijing merely has to be nice enough to India that South Block does not begin to think seriously about an alliance, even an unofficial one, with Japan and the United States and bring Barack Obama's pivot to fruition.</p><p>As regards Islamism, it is indeed a rising menace and has spread in recent months from Xinjiang to all across China. However, Beijing probably reckons that the Uyghurs may yet be brought to heel internally via police repression and population migration. In the meantime, economic aid to its "-stan" neighbours – Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan – will gain the cooperation of local governments against cross-border terrorism. Pakistan's jihadist complex and the instability of the state have been of growing concern, but China is yet to take concrete measures to rein in its all-weather ally.</p><p>A more insidious goal of Beijing is to degrade India's credibility in the neighbourhood. If India shies away from taking a more proactive role in South and Southeast Asian security, the other states of the region will begin to see Delhi as unreliable and weak rather than as a potential counter-balance to Beijing. Today, Modi is welcomed in Japan, Vietnam, and Australia, in ASEAN and in SAARC; yet if India remained apathetic to Asia's increasing fears of Chinese dominance today, it would be far more isolated 10 years on if it then tried to cobble together an anti-China alliance.</p><p>Perhaps it is because of their small stature on the world stage, but Indians are particularly susceptible to flattery. A few words about India's civilisational greatness will easily substitute for the lack of substance during the talks. So far, Modi has struck the right note – he has indicated that India is open for business but he has also chastised an unnamed country during his visit to Japan for its expansionism.</p><p>For all the investment Xi will bring to India, little will be achieved towards solving the geopolitical loggerhead and the Gordian knot at the heart of Asian power politics. Sino-Indian trade will increase and the Chinese and Indian economies will move closer, but contrary to the hopes of those who see economics as the driver of history and believe in the rational actor theory, the two Asian giants will continue to glare at each other across the Himalayas.</p>
