It is not the business of the government or the law-makers to decide who should marry whom

It is not the business of the government or the law-makers to decide who should marry whom

When Sania Mirza married a Pakistani, hindutva and nationalist groups protested against her and burned her photo, stating that she has become a traitor by marrying a Pakistani and she should have married an Indian. Some even said that if she wanted a muslim, she should have married an Indian muslim. Then the entire hate campaign against Sania Mirza was displayed under the shadow of patriotism.

Now, the entire cycle is repeating again in another form. This time, the enemy is not a muslim woman, but hindu women. Many believe that the primary desire behind the 'love jihad' conspiracy theory is to show muslim men as 'coverting' thieves who are after hindu women. But it also shows the mindset of India's religious extremist parties in assuming that 'hindu' women cannot think for themselves or that they don't have the mental capability to decide whom and why they should marry.

Tomorrow following the example set by hindutva parties, Islamic parties will issue a fatwa against muslim girls who fall in love with non-muslim boys. Looking at all this, our caste groups and khap panchayats need no other motivation to start killing lovers who marry out of caste.

Any adult citizen of any religion, race, language, nationality, gender and sexuality has all the right to marry any other consenting adult. That is how a marriage should be done. It is not the business of the government or the law-makers to decide who should marry whom.
