Nepal’s government is publicly criticizing FIFA for human rights abuses because Nepalese workers are banned from leaving the country to return home for funerals after the devastating earthquake last month. (They’re generally banned from leaving the country, period, or quitting their jobs, or traveling anywhere in a FIFA-branded Kia, because they are slaves.)</p><p>Sony, Castrol, Continental Tires, and Johnson & Johnson have all said “enough” and pulled their sponsorship of upcoming World Cups. The others have had more than enough time to speak with their wallets; six months later, we can unequivocally state that Coca-Cola, like McDonalds, Anheuser-Busch, and other familiar brands, still supports slavery.</p><p>If this is all still too opaque for you, perhaps this diagram will make things more clear:Qatar’s labour minister, Abdullah bin Saleh al-Khulaifi, visited Kathmandu last month and promised to introduce a series of changes. Polish presidential race too close to call, spells trouble for ruling party

<p>Poland(Reuters): Poles voted for a president on Sunday in a run-off that is too close to call but has already sounded a warning for the ruling Civic Platform as it looks to re-election later in the year. Originally seen as a shoo-in for a second five-year term, incumbent Bronislaw Komorowski finds himself neck and neck with his conservative challenger, Andrzej Duda, who defied opinion polls to come out on top in the May 10 first round.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/25/339545-poland-andrej-duda-reuters.jpg" /></p><p>Victory for 43-year-old Duda would mark the first major electoral win in almost a decade for the opposition Law and Justice party, and provide a springboard to challenge for government in the autumn. But even the race alone has turned Duda, former legal aide and member of the European parliament, into a national political player and shaken the ruling Civic Platform. Eight years in power, the centre-right Civic Platform has presided over rapid economic growth and rising salaries in eastern Europe's biggest economy.</p><p>But despite unprecedented prosperity, many Poles feel the fruits of their labour have been unfairly spread, resulting in increased inequality, and are eager for new faces at the top. "Economic growth? For the average citizen it is hardly perceptible," said Zbigniew Pela, 53, a railway worker who was voting for Duda on Sunday. "They create good living conditions for some social groups, who have their businesses, and not for ordinary citizens."</p><p>Komorowski, 62, has been criticised for running a lacklustre campaign, jumping to life only after his loss in the first round. Since then, he has shown more energy and two opinion polls on Friday had the contenders practically level. Piotr Matys, emerging markets strategist at Rabobank, said: "Even if Duda fails to dethrone President Komorowski, I think that the Civic Platform may not stay at the helm after the general election due later this year."</p><p>Some people said on Sunday they were voting for Komorowski because they felt he was a safe pair of hands on national security. Poland is worried it could become the Kremlin's next target after Russia's intervention in Ukraine.</p><p>In Poland, the prime minister leads the government but the president is head of the armed forces, has a say in foreign policy and in the passage of legislation, and also controls who heads the central bank. The last time Law and Justice held national office, Warsaw fell out with its allies in Berlin and the European Union, and was drawn into bitter rows with Moscow.</p><p>"I'm afraid of Duda," said Michal Moranski, a 26-year-old barman. "Komorowski ... cooperates with NATO and the EU and will form one front with them, without going ahead of everyone and waving his sabre."</p>

<p>New Delhi(PTI): India is planning to ask Pakistan to seize assets of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and most wanted terrorists Hafiz Saeed and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi as all three are in the UNSC's al Qaeda sanctions list which makes it incumbent upon Islamabad to freeze their holdings.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/24/339297-dawood-hafiz-lakhvi.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>The UN Security Council's al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee has listed Dawood, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Saeed and Mumbai terror attack key conspirator Lakhvi and put sanctions on them.</p><p>"As a UN member state, it is the responsibility of Pakistan to freeze their assets. We are planning to send a formal communication to Pakistan to let us know whether assets of the three terrorists were seized and if not will ask it to freeze them immediately," a government official said.</p><p>The committee, established pursuant to UN Security Council resolution 1267 (1999), is a Security Council subsidiary organ that oversees the implementation by member states of the three sanctions measures -- assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo -- imposed against targeted individuals and entities associated with al Qaeda, as designated by the Committee in its sanctions list.</p><p>India has been maintaining that 1993 Mumbai serial blasts key accused Dawood is in Pakistan, though Islamabad denies it.</p><p>Hafiz Saeed roams freely in Pakistan while Lakhvi, set free from a Rawalpindi jail last month, is currently living in the country.</p><p>Dawood was put in the UNSC sanction list in 2003, Saeed in 2008 and Lakhvi in 2008.</p><p>India's communication is expected to be sent through diplomatic channel.</p>

Gunfight kills 43 in troubled Mexican state

<p>Jalisco(AFP): At least 42 "suspected criminals" were killed in a gunfight with federal police in a western Mexico region hit by cartel violence, one of the bloodiest clashes in the country's drug war.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/23/338995-mexican-forces.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>One police officer also died in the shootout with armed civilians yesterday in the municipality of Tanhuato, in Michoacan state, near the border with Jalisco state, a federal government official told AFP.</p><p>The official said the dead included "42 suspected criminals and one federal police officer." Authorities had earlier reported the deaths of two officers.</p><p>Michoacan Governor Salvador Jara said the clash erupted when security forces stopped a suspicious vehicle, prompting its passengers to shoot.</p><p>"This was the beginning and then it evolved because the preliminary report I have is that those who were attacking were numerous," Jara told Radio Formula, adding that he could not confirm the death toll.</p><p>A federal police commander told AFP that the convoy chased the shooters into a ranch known as El Sol, where the clashes continued. Some 500 federal police and troops were guarding the ranch.</p><p>Jara said it was "very probable" that the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel was involved but that the attack was under investigation.</p><p>The New Generation cartel has launched deadly ambushes against police this year in Jalisco, but the identity or criminal affiliation of the armed civilians in yesterday's clash was not immediately known.</p><p>It was unclear how the authorities avoided a death toll as high as the suspects' but an official said the government would give a press conference later Friday.</p><p>Michoacan and Jalisco have endured some of the worst violence in a drug war that began to escalate in 2006, when the government deployed troops to combat cartels.</p><p>More than 80,000 people have been killed and another 22,000 gone missing nationwide in the past nine years.</p><p>The western region poses one of the toughest security challenges facing President Enrique Pena Nieto since he took office in December 2012.</p>

<p>Pentagon(Reuters): Two children were likely killed by a US air strike in Syria in November, the US military said on Thursday, the first time the Pentagon has acknowledged civilian casualties since it began an air campaign against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/22/338660-white-house.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>Two non-combatant adults also received minor injuries in the November air strikes, which targeted an explosives manufacturing facility operated by the al Qaeda-linked Khorasan Group, the U.S. military's Central Command said after an investigation of the reported casualties.</p><p>There have been several dozen reports of civilian casualties in the coalition bombing campaign that began August 8, but the investigation released on Thursday was the first time the US military has confirmed that civilian deaths were likely.</p><p>The military has examined 46 separate reports of civilian casualties since August 8, a Pentagon spokeswoman said. Of that number, 35 were found to be either not credible or the department did not have enough information to assess them.</p><p>Three of the allegations, involving three separate incidents, are being investigated to make a determination of the cause of the alleged injuries. The credibility of six other allegations is still being evaluated, she said.</p><p>The likely deaths acknowledged on Thursday took place on November 5-6 when US aircraft targeted a Khorasan Group facility near Harim City, Syria, that was used to make explosives and improvised bombs, according to a redacted investigation released on Thursday.</p><p>"We regret the unintentional loss of lives," said Lieutenant General James Terry, head of the US-led military task force fighting Islamic State. "The coalition continues to take all reasonable measures during the targeting process to mitigate risks to noncombatants."</p><p>U.S. Central Command, which is responsible for American troops in the Middle East, began receiving reports within a few days that there may have been civilian casualties in the air strikes, including the daughter of a known enemy fighter, the investigation said.</p><p>"A preponderance of the evidence available indicates the strikes likely resulted in the deaths of two civilian children at or near one of the targeted locations," the investigation concluded.</p><p>Central Command said that before striking the militant faction, the Pentagon conducted "a thorough assessment, review and validation process" and believed the targeted buildings were used exclusively for military purposes.</p><p>The investigation found the November air strikes struck their intended targets accurately, triggering secondary explosions, the statement said.</p>

He noted that the Israeli occupation does not hide its occupation and settlement plans.</p><p>Two days ago, the Israeli president and prime minister reiterated that Jerusalem, east and west, is a united city for the Jewish nation and it would remain the "eternal united capital" for them.</p><p>According to Al-Tafakji, the recent ongoing Israeli measures regarding the so-called "Absentee Property Law" is the Israeli tool used to target Palestinian properties owned by Palestinians living outside Jerusalem.</p><p>"Using this law, the occupation is targeting the remaining 13 per cent of occupied Jerusalem controlled by Palestinians," he said.</p>

<p>Washington DC(PTI): US President Barack Obama has named an Indian-American professor from Yale University as a member of the prestigious National Council on Humanities.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/21/338360-barack-obama-getty-images.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>The nomination of Akhil Amar, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at the university since 2008, was announced yesterday by Obama along with other key administration positions.</p><p>"I am confident that these outstanding individuals will serve the American people well, and I look forward to working with them," the President said in a statement.</p><p>Amar has been a professor at both Yale Law School and Yale College since 1985 and has held various professorships, including Southmayd Professor from 1993 to 2008, Professor from 1990 to 1993, Associate Professor from 1988 to 1990, and Assistant Professor from 1985 to 1988. He also worked as a law clerk to judge Stephen Breyer, then of the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, from 1984 to 1985. He is co-editor of a constitutional law casebook, 'Processes of Constitutional Decision-making', and has written several other books on constitutional law.</p><p>Amar is a member of the Board of Directors of the Constitutional Accountability Center and the Coalition of Freedom Advisory Board of the National Constitution Center. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007 and was named a Senior Scholar by the National Constitution Center in 2000. CIA put positive spin on torture for the movie Zero Dark Thirty

<p><strong>Washington DC(AFP):</strong> The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) leaked propaganda material to the team of Zero Dark Thirty to build a positive spin on how its brutal torture programmes yielded intelligence used to find and kill Osama bin Laden, according to evidence shown in a documentary film this week.</p><p><img alt="Director Kathryn Bigelow arrives at the premiere of the feature film " src="http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/02411/PREMIERE_OF_ZERO_D_2411173f.jpg" /></p><p>In Secrets, Politics and Torture, which premiers on Tuesday on the PBS Frontline channel, internal memos of the CIA show that the Agency deliberately chose to back the film by Kathryn Bigelow given its likely success at the Oscars, and the opportunity it presented to rewrite the narrative on whether torture yielded any valuable intelligence.</p><p>Picking favourites</p><p>In one memo apparently authored by ex-CIA Spokesperson Marie Harf, the discussion focusses on “picking favourites.”</p><p>Ms. Harf wrote, “I know we don’t ‘pick favourites,’ but it makes sense to get behind the winning horse… Mark and Kathryn’s movie is going to be the first and the biggest. It’s got the most money behind it and two Oscar winners on board.” Sure enough, the 2012 film went on to win critical acclaim, receiving nominations in five categories at the 85th Academy Awards, and winning in one of them. It also scooped up multiple Golden Globe Award nominations and a Best Actress award.</p><p>The documentary reveals some senior members of Congress serving on intelligence committees had serious reservations about the film’s narrative on how the intelligence obtained — using torture techniques like water-boarding on Guantanamo Bay inmates — was of actual value in the May 2011 raid in which bin Laden was killed. Democrat and California Senator Dianne Feinstein was one such lawmaker.</p><p>As Chair of the Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence since 2009, she had intimate knowledge of the Agency’s torture programmes and was in fact leading the fight against the CIA’s attempts to recast the efficacy of the programmes.</p><p>In the PBS documentary, she said, “I walked out of Zero Dark Thirty, candidly… I got into it [for] about 15-20 minutes [and then] I left. I couldn’t handle it, because it’s so false.”</p><p>For years, lawmakers such as Senators Feinstein and Mark Udall have fought to bring to light a parallel narrative to the one pushed by the CIA.</p><p>In December 2014, they succeeded, the PBS documentary notes, with the publication of the Committee’s review of the “enhanced interrogation” techniquesof the CIA, a report that found these methods to be “brutal and far worse” than the CIA let on, and further, that it was ineffective, detrimental to national security and did not help find bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.</p>

Indian-American Bobby Jindal moves closer to announcing US presidential bid

<p>Washington DC(PTI): Setting his sights on the White House, Indian-American Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has formed an exploratory committee to look into the possibility of mounting a credible challenge as a Republican nominee for the 2016 US presidential bid.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/19/337726-afp-bobby-jindal.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>If Jindal, 43, announces to go ahead with his plans, he would be the first ever Indian-American politician to run for a US presidential election. In doing so, he would join the already crowded Republican presidential aspirants.</p><p>Forming an exploratory committee is considered to be the first serious step toward a presidential bid. The Republican Governor, however, said he would make a final decision on a White House bid after his state's legislative session ends in mid-June.</p><p>"My parents came to this country over 40 years ago with nothing but the belief that America is the land of freedom and opportunity. They were right," Jindal said on his website announcing the formation of the Bobby Jindal Exploratory Committee.</p><p>"We must fight to make sure the next generation is not the first generation to inherit fewer opportunities than their parents. Will you join me?" Jindal asked on the home page of the website with the headline 'Ready'.</p><p>Jindal said that if he runs, his candidacy would be based on the idea the American people "are ready to try a dramatically different direction."</p><p>"If I run, my candidacy will be based on the idea that the American people are ready to try a dramatically different direction. More than 50 dead, dozens injured in Colombia landslide

<p>Columbia (Reuters): A landslide sent mud and water crashing onto homes in a town in Colombia's northwest mountains on Monday, killing more than 50 people and injuring dozens, officials said.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/19/337697-landlide-columbia.jpg" /></p><p>"The earth slid into the course of the La Liboriana ravine, then the dammed water caused an avalanche which destroyed everything in its path" in Salgar in Antioquia department,<br /> regional police commander Jose Angel Mendoza said in an interview.</p><p>The national disaster unit said in a statement that 52 people were killed and 37 others had been treated for injuries. Rescue teams, including search dogs, continue working in the area looking for an unknown number of missing people.</p><p>Photographs released by the country's air force and television news footage showed homes and streets covered in mud and debris in the town in a mountainous area close to the Colombian Andes.</p><p>Residents were shown digging through rubble with sticks and their hands, looking for survivors.</p><p>"We don't know how many people are missing," said President Juan Manuel Santos, who flew over the affected area to survey the damage and met with local authorities.</p><p>Santos declared a public emergency, freeing up relief funds for victims.</p><p>"People that you knew, children, young people, whole families lost their homes. We're on alert because there are fears there could be another landslide," resident Maria Gutierrez told local media.</p><p>"It almost gave me a heartache. We saw big waves and people and pigs going down in the water."</p><p>Additional but less intense rain is expected over the next two to three days, meteorology officials said.</p>

<p>New York (AFP): A federal appeals court says YouTube should not have been forced to take down an anti-Muslim film that sparked violence in the Middle East and death threats to actors.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/19/337695-googlegetty.jpg" /></p><p>The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals issued its ruling in favor of Google today. The decision comes after free speech advocates urged the court to overturn a 9th Circuit panel's ruling that ordered YouTube to take down the video.</p><p>Actress Cindy Lee Garcia wanted "Innocence of Muslims" removed from the site after receiving death threats. Her lawyer argued she had a copyright claim to the low-budget film because she believed she was acting in a different production.</p><p>Google, which owns YouTube, argued Garcia had no claim to the film because the filmmaker wrote the dialogue, managed the production and dubbed over her lines.</p><p>It wasn't immediately clear if or when the video would be reposted on YouTube.</p>

<p>Kathmandu(PTI): Nepal has suffered a loss of up to USD 10 billion in the devastating earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks that rattled the Himalayan nation, the government said today, as it appealed to donors for long-term support for bringing the country back on track.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/16/336803-nepal-quake-new.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>Chairing a meeting of donor agencies, Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said that the preliminary estimated cost for the reconstruction of the quake-ravaged country is USD 5 billion and works have been started by setting up a fund of US $2 billion for the time being.</p><p>"The country has suffered a loss between US $5 to 10 billion due to the damaged caused by the April 25 earthquake and the aftershocks," the Finance Minister said.</p><p>He said that bringing the flagging economy back on track is very challenging since the economy was adversely affected by the April 25 earthquake that killed over 8,400 people across Nepal.</p><p>He said short term support was needed immediately to fulfill the basic needs while the long term support would be required for the reconstruction.</p><p>He said the government is working on a long term plan for the same.</p><p>Over one million private and public houses and buildings have been damaged totally or partially by the earthquake that rattled the Himalayan nation.</p><p>Several other sectors like services industry, agriculture, tourism, health and education have also been badly hit by the quake.</p><p>Expressing the determination to reach the assistance provided by the donor agencies to the quake affected people in a transparent manner, the Finance Minister said, "Transparency would be maintained for every rupee received in the name of relief to the earthquake victims and the amount would be audited."</p><p>Chairing the meeting under a tent after the ministry's building sustained several cracks, the Finance Minister appealed to the international community to follow the one-window policy of the government and put money and resources through the government channel.</p><p>Nepal government's main administration works are being carried out under tents after many buildings located in the Singhdurbar secretariat complex developed cracks due to the earthquake.</p><p>The Minister said the quake would continue to take the toll on the country's economy in the next fiscal year too.</p><p>He assured that the government would carry out reconstruction of the damaged physical infrastructures in the country as per the world renowned Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA).</p>

PM Modi asks China to back India's bid for UNSC seat, NSG membership

<p>New Delhi(PTI): Pressing China to back India's bid for a permanent seat in a reformed UN Security Council and membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said such a move will take bilateral ties to a new level and give Asia a stronger voice.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/15/336743-modi-li-pti.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>"China's support for India's permanent membership of a reformed UNSC and for India's membership of export control regimes like Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) will do more than just strengthen our international cooperation," Modi said while addressing the students of the Tsinghua University. Earlier, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar told the media that China for the first time said it has taken note of India's interest to become a member of the 44-nation NSG which controls the civil nuclear technology trade regime.</p><p>On UNSC, China reiterated that it backs India's aspiration to play big role in the world body. China is the only veto-wielding permanent member which is yet to come out in support of India's interest to become a permanent UNSC member. "It will take our relationship to a new level. It will give Asia stronger voice in the world," Modi said.</p><p>"If we are able to deepen mutual trust and confidence, we will also be able to reinforce each other's efforts of connecting Asia with itself and rest of the world," he said. In an apparent reference to the frictions between the two countries over strategic rivalry in South Asia, Modi said, "We are both increasing our engagement in our shared neighbourhood. This calls for deeper strategic communication to build mutual trust and confidence."<br /> "We must ensure that our relationships with other countries do not become a source of concern for each other.</p><p>And, wherever possible and feasible, we should work together, as we did in responding to the earthquake in Nepal," he said in reference to the aid given by both countries to the Himalayan nation in the wake of the April 25 quake. "If the last century was the age of alliances, this is an era of inter-dependence. So, talks of alliances against one another have no foundation," Modi said.</p><p>Earlier, during talks with Li, the two sides made positive comments on each other's assistance to the quake relief work in Nepal and agreed to strengthen cooperation on disaster mitigation and relief in underdeveloped regions. India and China also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern, including climate change, regional connectivity and terrorism.</p>

'We were not prepared' for Tuesday's quake, says Nepalese PM

<p>Kathmandu(PTI): Nepalese Prime Minister Sushil Koirala on Thursday said that his government was caught off guard by the fresh powerful earthquake this week and it is working on a rehabilitation plan to reconstruct the damaged infrastructure, as the total death toll crossed 8,250.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/14/336354-sushil-koirala.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>"After the first quake, we were not prepared for it," he said during his visit to Dolakha to assess the extent of damage caused by Tuesday's 7.3 magnitude quake. "We will move ahead now," Koirala said.<br /> He said his government is working on a rehabilitation plan to reconstruct the damaged infrastructure which will be acceptable to all.</p><p>But the government's plan could be implemented only if all political parties work in unity towards it, he added. "This is not the time to play politics," he said. "Together we can tackle this calamity." His remarks came even as five aftershocks jolted Nepal on Thursday, triggering panic among the people as the death toll in the Tuesday's powerful earthquake climbed to 107.</p><p>The quake triggered massive panic among the people, who have been staying in the open since the 7.9-magnitude lethal temblor struck on April 25, flattening thousands of buildings besides destroying entire villages and killing 8,151 people.</p><p>Five small tremors -- measuring between 4 and 5 on the Richter scale --were recorded near Kathmandu as aftershocks continued to jolt the quake-affected region. However, no damages were reported from the temblors.</p><p>The highest number of casualties from the Tuesday's quake - 51 people - are from the Dolakha district, situated 75 km east of Kathmandu. Altogether 211 aftershocks have been reported in Nepal after the April 25 quake temblor that left the country devastated with thousands reeling under the impact of the disaster.</p><p>Meanwhile, a seven-storeyed building that had developed cracks due to the quake last month collapsed in Kalanki area of Kathmandu on Thursday. However, no casualties were reported. Rescue workers are searching for survivors from the latest quake. Search is also on for a US military helicopter that was reported missing with six US Marines and two Nepalese soldiers on board while delivering aid.</p>

The attack started at about 0900 PM last night when three gunmen launched a brazen assault at the guesthouse, located in the Kolola Pushta area of the Kabul city.</p><p>Soon after the gunmen stormed the guest house, Afghan National Security Forces including Special Forces arrived and began striking back the attackers and also rescuing those under siege inside the guesthouse.</p><p>All three attackers were killed in the siege that lasted for about seven hours, ending in the wee hours of this morning.</p>

Five-hour siege at Kabul guest house ends; Two Indians among 7 foreign nationals dead

<p><strong>Kabul(Reuters):</strong> Authorities at the scene of a five-hour attack on a guest house in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Wednesday said the standoff between armed attackers and police was over. The police chief of Kabul was expected to speak to reporters soon about casualties, details of which remained unclear.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/14/336118-kabul-attack-afp.jpg" width="600" /></p><p>Two Indian nationals among seven foreigners who were reportedly killed in the attack. The US Embassy has confirmed that one American citizen has been killed in the incident.</p><p>An army commander said at least 16 people were rescued from the Park Plaza guest house in an area popular with foreigners and wealthy Afghans. Police on the scene cited witnesses saying dozens had been trapped inside the guest house.</p><p>Gunmen stormed a guest house popular with foreigners in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday evening just before it was due to host a concert, and up to 100 people were reportedly trapped inside as security forces fought to clear the building. Authorities cordoned off the area around the Park Palace guest house in Kabul's Kolola Pushta area immediately after the attack began around 8:30 p.m. local time (1600 GMT). Three police in the area said several attackers had entered the Park Palace and were believed to be still inside. All three spoke on condition of anonymity.</p><p>Kolola Pushta is home to several international guest houses and hotels and is near both the Ministry of Interior and the Indian embassy. India's ambassador to Afghanistan tweeted that all Indian nationals were reported safe.</p><p>Earlier on Wednesday, gunmen opened fire at a meeting of prominent Muslim clerics in the southern province of Helmand, killing at least seven people, police official Jan Aqa said. The Ulemma Council, the highest religious authority in a deeply conservative country, had repeatedly announced its support for security forces fighting the hardline Islamist Taliban insurgents.</p><p>The Taliban have stepped up attacks since they announced their "spring offensive" last month, after most foreign forces pulled out at the end of last year, and claimed responsibility for the Helmand assault.</p><p>Ousted from power in 2001, the Taliban have been fighting to bring down the U.S.-backed government in Kabul. Earlier this month, insurgent suicide bombers twice attacked buses carrying staff belonging to the attorney general's office in Kabul, killing at least four people.</p>

47 killed in bus attack in Pakistan's Karachi

<p>Karachi(dawn): At least 47 people from minority Shia Ismaili community were killed and several others injured after eight gunmen entered their bus and opened indiscriminate fire on the passengers in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi on Wednesday, police said.</p><p><img alt="" src="http://static.dnaindia.com/sites/default/files/2015/05/13/335878-pak-bus-attack-pic-500.jpg" /></p><p>"Eight armed men on motorcycles opened fire on a bus at Safoora Chorangi, Gulistan-e-Johar area of Karachi, killing at least 41 passengers," a police official said.</p><p>The gunmen stopped the overloaded bus, entered inside it and open fire indiscriminately, the police said.</p><p>The attack came a day after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif visited Kabul and declared that enemies of Afghanistan are also enemies of Pakistan.</p><div class="Tweet-header u-cf" style="position: relative;
