Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was on Saturday convicted under prevention of corruption act by a special court in Bangalore. She has sentenced to a jail term of 4 years by the Bangalore Special Court and has been slapped with a fine of Rs 100 crores in the judgement for an 18-year-old corruption case.
Jayalalithaa moves Karnataka High Court against conviction, seeks bail; O Panneerselvam sworn in as Chief Minister
Special Judge John Michael D'Cunha convicted the 66-year-old AIADMK Chief in a case of owning assets to the tune Rs 66,65 crores disproportionate to her known sources of income during 1991-96 when she was chief minister for the first time.
Jayalalithaa's close aide Sasikala Natarajan, her niece Ilavarasi and her nephew and the chief minister's disowned foster son Sudhakaran were also convicted. The verdict was delivered at a makeshift court in the Parappana Agrahara prison complex in the presence of Jayalalithaa and the other accused.
AIADMK workers hold demonstrations, fast across Tamil Nadu
Continuing their protest against the conviction of AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa for the third day, party workers and sympathisers today observed a fast and staged demonstrations across the state. Police said no untoward incident was reported so far in the state, which witnessed sporadic violence such as stone pelting and torching of vehicles in the aftermath of the verdict.
O Panneerselvam sworn in as Chief Minister
O Panneerselvam was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after being selected by AIADMK to succeed Jayalalithaa at a meeting of MLAs on Sunday. An emotional Panneerselvam was seen wiping his eyes as he was sworn-in as Chief Minister by Governor K Rosaiah at the Raj Bhavan. Even when Rosaiah extended customary greetings after the oath taking ceremony, Panneerselvam appeared deeply distressed and the Governor was seen comforting him.
A sombre mood prevailed as the newly sworn in ministers of the crisis-ridden AIADMK appeared grim. The media was not invited for coverage of the swearing-in ceremony and no invitations reached the opposition parties.
Jayalalithaa files petition in Karnataka High Court, seeks bail
Jailed AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa today filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court challenging her conviction and seeking bail in the disproportionate assets case against her. The 66-year-old leader sought relief two days. Jayalalithaa's aide Sasikala, her relatives V N Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi also approached the Court, seeking bail and challenging their conviction in the case.
