New Delhi: Black money, which was a trump card used by the party during the Lok Sabha polls, is now all set to haunt the Modi government in Parliament with the opposition parties — Trinamool Congress, Janata Dal(U), JD(U), RJD and the Samajwadi Party— uniting to corner the BJP-led government on the second day of Parliament's Winter Session. Despite the government hoping to set the ball rolling on key reforms, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 12 noon following the protests over the issue of black money today.
TMC, JD(U) unite against BJP, protest outside Parliament over black money
The Trinamool Congress and JD (U) staged a protest outside Parliament today over black money issue and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of not fulfilling his electoral promise of bringing back the black money stashed abroad to India within 100 days of coming to power.
The two parties gave a notice for suspension of question hour in Lok Sabha on the issue as well. TMC lawmakers blocked the entry gate and shouted slogans against NDA government.
A majority of the TMC's MPs including Dinesh Trivedi and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar were at the gate shouting slogans like "Modi tanashai nahin chalegi" (Modi's Dicatorship will not be tolerated), "kala dhan wapas lao" (bring back black money).
TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar told CNN IBN that the government must reply. "The Modi government promised to bring back black money in 100 days. Almost 200 days are over, they must give an answer," he said.
Meanwhile, CNN IBN reported that the Samajwadi Party has threatened that no other proceedings will be allowed in both Houses of Parliament today.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that his party will take up several issues like , black money, aid to Andhra Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and the dismantling of planning commission.
Opposition parties have been planning to disrupt both Houses over a decision to take up the zero hour before question hour.
On Sunday, Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who is already on the warpath against the BJP, has declared that she would "politically retaliate" against her party being dragged into the Saradha scam.
She had also warned that her Parliamentarians would take on the government over the repatriation of black money.
However, at the all-party meeting held over the weekend, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that all important issues can be taken up and the government is more than willing to work on the suggestions from the opposition parties.
BJP does have an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, but it is in a minority in the Rajya Sabha and would have to depend on the opposition’s cooperation for key bills to be passed.
