Guwahati: One person was killed and four others seriously injured in firing from across the state border of Nagaland in trouble-torn Uriamghat area in Golaghat district of Assam yesterday, government officials said. Unidentified persons from across the border fired in a paddy field at Ratanpur village, under Surapathar police station when people were working there, said Additional Deputy Commissioner (Border) Rohiteswar Dewari.

One persons Prem Ekka (38) died and four, including three women, were injured, he said. The injured– Juliet Khujur, Bobita Khujur, Diyanish Vinger and Sanjoy Ekka — have been admitted to Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital in Golaghat town in a serious condition, Additional SP (Headquarters) Numol Mahoto said.

Another six persons were missing after the firing incident, Mahoto said. Though the situation is tense, he said it is under control as security forces such as SSB, Assam Police Battalion and CRPF have been deployed along the entire D-sector under which the area falls. The Assam-Nagaland border area is divided into six sectors, named as sectors A, B, C, D, E and F falling in the districts of Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat and Karbi Anglong for administrative convenience.

Senior administration officers like Upper Assam Commissioner incharge Anurag Goyal, DIG (Eastern Range) Satyan Gogoi, Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Nitin Khera and Superintendent of Police P P Singh were camping at the site. Movement of vehicles on NH-37 and NH-39 through Assam in Sivasagar, Mariani ,Dhudor Ali and Golaghat has been stopped.

Today’s firing is the second such incident after August 17 at Nikolas Basti in Uriamghat area where unidentified persons from Nagaland side had gunned down 12 persons, kidnapped four others and torched several houses. All Assam Tea Tribes Students Association Secretary Dhiraj Gowala condemned the attack on the border residents cultivating in the area for 100 years.
