GUWAHATI : Amid concerns over rise in jihadi activities in the state, the message at the anti-terrorism convention organized by the Assam State Jamiat Ulama here on Thursday was loud and clear — a person cannot be a Muslim and a terrorist at the same time because Islam never professes terror.
IB and other intelligence agencies are filled with Right Wing Hindu officers secretly: Dr. Hiren Gohain
Reiterating its fatwa against terrorism issued in 2008, the convention on Thursday categorically said it was unjustified to target or view the entire Muslim community as anti-national for a few who had been arrested for terror links. A large number of Islamic scholars, social activists and intellectuals attended the event.
Scholar Hiren Gohain said it is sad that ordinary Muslims are often harassed in the name of containing terrorism.
"IB and other intelligence agencies are filled with Right Wing Hindu officers secretly. Many Muslims youths in the past were put in jails on terror charges but had to be released after they were found innocent. They had to suffer because of faulty investigation," added Gohain.
"Our 2008 fatwa is very clear about terrorism. A person who indulges in terror activities cannot be a Muslim. This is true with other religions too. It is a matter of great pain that for the wrongs done by a few individuals, the entire Muslim community is being looked upon with suspicion," said Assam State Jamiat president Badruddin Ajmal.
The all-India general secretary of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Mahmood Asad Madani, said Indian Muslims are as patriotic as other citizens. "India is home to 50 per cent of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent. Indian Muslims stayed in India even when the country was partitioned in the name of religion. Indian Muslims love their country as much as other Indians. There is no doubt about it. Despite deprivation, Indian Muslims abstained from waging terrorism even as several groups in the country had floated armed outfits," said Madani.
"Indian Muslims have grievances but we will fight it constitutionally," he added.
