Mumbai: Just a day after the Congress Party had announced the first list of 118 candidates for the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party, its political ally in the state, has declared that it is severing the 15-year-old alliance with the Congress.
Alliance with Congress Over, Will Fight Elections Alone: NCP
Like the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena, the ruling allies in the state had been involved in a fight over the seat-sharing in the state Assembly polls that are due to take place on October 15, and the alliance had been perched precariously on the edge.
There had been a meeting in the NCP all day today, and the announcement of the 118 candidates by the Congress had come as a shock and had proved to be the final straw for the NCP.
Sunil Tatkare, who is the state leader of the NCP has said during a media conference today evening that his party had not even been aware of the first list by the Congress party.
He said that yesterday the Congress had come out with the list of candidates, and said that the Congress had declared the candidates for even the seats that the NCP had been discussing with them.
The fight between the NCP and the Congress had reportedly gotten worse after the latest demand by the NCP that the post of the Chief Minister should be rotated in case the Congress-NCP alliance is voted to power.
The Congress party had contradicted this, and had termed this demand ‘unreasonable’.
The Congress had been willing to give its ally 124 seats.
Praful Patel, who is a senior leader of the NCP, has said that the Congress’ offer of 124 seats had been rejected by his party. He then added that his party had officially met with the Congress party for the first time just a few days ago, and also said that the NCP was willing to go with like-minded parties.
